Three of Sorrento’s local firefighters have been reported missing off the coast of Sorrento last night after they failed to return from their fishing trip on the coldest August night in the state for 23 years.
Mr Fred Smith, Mr John Taylor and Mr Bill Smith were due back at approximately midnight last however with no sign of them Police were alerted to the missing men at 4am this morning with a scrambled rescue search mounted at dawn.
In freezing conditions last night, the man in charge of the search and rescue teams Inspector Rod Cathall of the Victoria Police told reporters; ‘We hold grade fears for them’ due to ‘the bad weather conditions reported overnight.’
According to the Victorian Bureau of Meteorology’s spokesperson, Hayden Grewsome the air temperature declined to a near freezing zero with a water temperature of just four degrees Celsius. ‘It [is] the kind of weather that kills people.’
